Light a Diya. But why?

Light plays a paramount role in our lives. It is what guides us, enlightens us and inspires us. So, it’s no surprise that we spend so much of our time thinking about how to bring more light into our lives and our homes. But this desire seems to be more seasonal, especially when festivals come around.

However, spreading light should be a year-round endeavor. And one way to do that is by lighting diyas. They are very deeply intertwined with our culture and tradition. It is important to understand and remember why its done.

So, here are ten reasons why one should light a diya:

1) Diyas have a symbolic significance to our heritage. The lighting of a diya represents the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance. And so it spreads positivity wherever it is lit.

2)  Diyas are placed at the entrance of homes because they act as guiding lights bringing prosperity and success into our lives.

3) Diyas create an atmosphere of peace and security, which is exactly what a home should be. Read about importance of puja in our lives.

4) Significant occasions are often marked with the lighting of a diya or a lamp. This is to bless new beginnings and celebrate happy moments.

5) Lighting a diya at your workplace is helpful in spreading positive energy as it symbolises wisdom and prosperity.

6) There are scientific reasons to lighting diyas as well. In monsoons, when the air is moist, it is actually filled with bacteria. The heat from the diya helps clean the air.

7) Diyas are environment friendly, as they don’t tend to leave a much harmful residue, which is the case with many other forms of light.

8) This source of light isn’t dependent on electricity so, in a country with so many power outages, diyas are a practical solution to the problem.

9)  It is an inexpensive way to spread some light around, because you don’t have to pay any additional electricity bills to light diyas.

10) Diyas are also extremely easy to set up and can be lit at a moment’s notice. All you need is a…DIYA!
